Roots of Faith: Our Church History
The Christian Reformed Church in the Philippines (CRCP) traces its roots to the global Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, particularly inspired by the teachings of the French Reformer John Calvin (1509-1564). The CRCP began in 1962 when Vince and Lucy Apostol, missionaries from the Christian Reformed Church in North America, initiated church planting efforts on Negros Island under the auspices of Christian Reformed World Missions (CRWM).
The CRCP was formally organized as a denomination in 1976, starting with three congregations. These congregations were grouped into five regional assemblies, known as classes. A significant milestone was achieved in 1983 with the establishment of a synod, which serves as the highest governing body of the denomination. By 1990, the CRCP had grown to include 25 organized churches and 20 church plants.
In 1997, the CRCP Synod convened to define a denominational vision and strategic plan, marking a transition in CRWM’s role to support the CRCP in realizing its goals. Since its inception, the CRCP has experienced significant growth and development.
Currently, the CRCP consists of ten classes, with over 50 congregations and a membership exceeding 5,000. The network includes 55 organized churches, 46 organizing churches and church planting initiatives, and 29 outreach programs spread across the Philippines, demonstrating the CRCP’s ongoing commitment to ministry and community development.
